4 baseball
- a game that is popular in the USA, played with a baseball bat and ball by two teams of nine players. It is played on a baseball field. Each player tries to hit the ball and then run round the field, passing four places (bases) in order to get a run. The player who is trying to hit the ball is the batter. The person behind him who tries to catch the ball is the catcher. The person who throws the ball is the pitcher.
- The batter is out if he does not succeed in hitting the ball after three attempts, or if a fielder catches the ball or touches him with the ball when he is between bases.

5 basketball
- a game that is played by two teams of five or six players. It is played with a basketball on a basketball court. A goal (called a basket) is scored by throwing the ball into a net with an open bottom. A game similar to basketball which is usually played by women is netball.

6 cricket
- a game that is played by two teams of eleven players on a grass pitch. The teams take it in turns to bat (= hit the ball with a cricket bat). The batsman (= person who is batting) stands at one end of the wicket (= strip of grass in the middle of the pitch) and the bowler bowls (= throws) the ball towards him and tries to hit the three pieces of wood (also called a wicket) which are behind the batsman. If he hits the wicket, the batsman is out and a new team member replaces him.
- The batsman tries to hit the ball and score a run by running to the other end of the wicket, while the players from the other team (the fielders) throw the ball back to the bowler. If one of the fielders catches the ball before it hits the ground, the batsman is out. When all the batsmen are out, the other team comes* in to bat. A person who plays cricket is a cricketer.

7 fighting and shooting sports

8 golf
- a game in which each player uses a golf club (= a kind of stick) to hit a golf ball (a small hard ball) into a series of nine or eighteen holes on a large area of land called a golf course. One game of golf is called a round (of golf). An act of hitting the ball is a shot. The winner is the player who succeeds in going round the course with the smallest number of shots. A person who plays golf is a golfer.

9 hockey
- a game (in AmE called field hockey) played on a field by two teams of eleven players each. Each player uses a hockey stick (= a kind of curved stick) to hit the ball (which is small and hard) into a goal. Hockey which is played on ice using skates is called ice hockey (AmE hockey). Ice hockey is played with a wooden puck instead of a ball.

10 indoor sports
- physical exercises that are done indoors, often using special equipment such as bars and ropes: gymnastics (noun U); a person who does gymnastics: gymnast

13 tennis
- a game played on a tennis court by two or four players who hit a tennis ball to each other across a net using tennis rackets. A game of tennis played by two players is called singles and one which is played by four players is called doubles. In a game of tennis, players play many games, in which they score points; the first player to win six games wins a set; three or five sets make a match.
- You start play when you serve the ball; an act of serving the ball is a serve (formal service); the person who does this is the server.
- A score of no points is called love (for example, '30 love' means that one player has 30 points and the other player has none). When both players have the same points you say all (for example, 'fifteen all' means that both players have fifteen points). When both players have 40 points, the score is called deuce.

14 volleyball
- a game that is played on a volleyball court by two teams of six players. The players hit a volleyball over a high net with their hands.

15 water sports
