John of Gaunt
John of Gaunt [John of Gaunt] BrE NAmE
(1340–99) an English prince who was Duke of Lancaster from 1362. He was the son of ↑Edward II and acted as the head of government before ↑Richard II was old enough to be king. His son was ↑Henry IV. His name refers to his place of birth, which was Ghent, now in Belgium.
