the administrative centre of ↑Lincolnshire, in the east of England. It was originally a Roman city and has several important Roman ↑remains. It also contains many beautiful ↑medieval buildings, including a castle, begun in 1068, and a famous cathedral with three ↑spires (= pointed towers), built mainly between the 11th and 14th centuries. The city has one of Britain’s newest universities, opened in 1996.
