Word Origin:
mid 19th cent.: named after George M. Pullman (1831–97), its American designer.

Culture:
A Pullman carriage often has beds for passengers to sleep in during journeys at night. It was developed by George Pullman (1831–1901) who built the Pioneer Sleeping Car in 1863 and formed the Pullman Palace Car Company in 1867. From 1985, ↑British Rail applied the name ‘Pullman’ to its first-class carriages serving meals, drinks, etc.
