a member of a Native American people, many of whom live in the south-western US

Word Origin:
from Mexican Spanish, probably from Zuni Apachu, literally ‘enemy’.

Culture:
In the late 19th century the Apaches, under such leaders as ↑Cochise and ↑Geronimo, were the last Native Americans to be defeated by the US Cavalry. Today many Apaches live on reservations (= areas of land given and protected by the US government) in the states of Arizona, Oklahoma and New Mexico.
