mid 16th cent.: from Latin impingere ‘drive something in or at’, from in- ‘into’ + pangere ‘fix, drive’. The word originally meant ‘thrust at forcibly’, then ‘come into forcible contact’; hence ‘encroach’ (mid 18th cent.).
